Otherwise you're just wasting money and time that you could spend better just working on your tunes. So, learn theory, but only if you're sure you're actually gonna sit and engage with the material and make actual effort to understand it. You know what'll help more though, is just sitting down for hours pouring over your work and figuring it out, there's no replacement for it. Yes, it'll help your writing, but only if you're disciplined enough to sit down and actually use it. I don't know why people hold it up as this holy grail of musical understanding. Theory won't teach you about compression, or spatial clarity, or levelling or any of the really important things that go into making electronic music. Doesn't make a difference, I still had to start at the beginning when learning production and it's still weak compared to what some super persistent 16 year olds can do from their bedrooms. I wrote for choir, orchestra, solo instrument, the works. I have a bachelor's in music, where I majored in composition. I got into college without even being able to read sheet music, I learned it there. It's just not and learning theory won't help your production beyond writing the melodic and harmonic content, which is only a small part of the deal. But you have to understand, music theory isn't this all powerful key to unlocking your potential as a composer. Later then, if you want go find a tutor who can explain harmony to you. It's amazing how much is just internalised. Learn a few pieces, figure out how harmony works starting with things you can see directly in front of you.
